Thousands of people have been evacuated after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered at a building site in central London.

A number of Soho streets were cordoned off after construction workers found the device at Dean Street.

Shop keepers and office staff were told to leave their buildings as dozens of officers restricted access to the busy neighbourhood.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as people fled some of the capital’s most popular bars, restaurants and theatres.

A Royal Engineers bomb disposal unit was called in to remove the half-tonne device.
