Treasurer has violent coughing fit during coronavirus update

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg succumbed to a violent coughing fit in the middle of his coronavirus economic update to parliament today.

Once he recovered, the minister continued to deliver the briefing where he revealed nearly 1.3 million Australians had gained access to early super “equating to about $10.6 billion” at an average withdrawal of $8,000, according to ATO figures.

The treasurer spoke optimistically about Australia’s position compared to other global markets despite forecasting GDP would drop by over $50 billion in the June quarter.

Mr Frydenberg told the house Australia’s underlying cash deficit ended $9.9 billion higher than MYEFO forecasting, emphatically stating the virus would not get the best of us.
