Mass crowds are expected outside Victoria’s Parliament this Saturday for a planned demonstration to protest black deaths in police custody in solidarity with George Floyd protests occurring cross the United States.
Police will be present at the protest and warned they would be prepared to intervene if any protesters became violent.
Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said anyone tempted “to incite violence or incite hatred can expect a swift and firm response by your police.”
Victoria’s mass gathering laws are restricted to a maximum of 20 people but state police have refrained from declaring the event illegal, while social distancing regulations will remain in place.
Police are also prepared for a counter-protest outside of parliament.
