Hurricane Laura hits US – but some residents stay put amid COVID-19 fears

Published on August 28, 2020 by

More than half a million people have been ordered to flee the US Gulf Coast as forecasters predict “catastrophic damage” from Hurricane Laura.

However, many residents in Texas and Louisiana have remained due to fears over the coronavirus pandemic, or the financial cost of leaving their homes and businesses.

In just 24 hours the storm has grown nearly 90% in power, prompting warnings that even stronger winds could be possible.
