Published on August 24, 2020 by

With peak wildfire season still weeks away, the state of California has recorded more land burnt in the past week than is usually burnt during an entire season.

A rare storm resulted in more than 12,000 lightning strikes which ignited more than 500 wildfires across the state which quickly flared up due to high winds and temperatures.

California Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Brunton described the fire season as “unprecedented” and “historic”.

Approximately 700 properties have been destroyed, six lives have been lost and 100,000 people have been placed under evacuation orders.
