Health Minister Greg Hunt has confirmed Australia has backed a European Union motion for an independent inquiry into the origins of COVID-19.
“We support the EU motion which includes an independent investigation, regulatory work on wet markets and also the potential for independent inspection powers,” Mr Hunt told Sky News.
The Morrison Government has been pushing for inquiry for some weeks, a move that prompted a diplomatic stoush with China.
Mr Hunt also labelled the decision to close the border to China — which was against WHO advice at the timee — as the “most important decision” an Australian government had made in decades.
“The World Health Organisation accepts Australia has some differences with them,” Mr Hunt said.
“Our most important decision perhaps … over the course of the virus was the closure of the borders with China,” he told Sky News.
“We believe we made not just the right decision but one of the most important decisions made by an Australian government in decades.”
