19 July: US to send 500 troops to Saudi Arabia

The United States is preparing to dispatch hundreds of troops to Saudi Arabia.
Defense officials say some five-hundred troops are expected to go to the Prince Sultan Air Base, located in a desert area east of the Saudi capital Riyadh. A small number of troops and support personnel are already on the site. Initial preparations are also being made for a Patriot missile battery as well as runway and airfield improvements. The deployment follows a pledge by the Trump administration which announced last month that it was sending one thousand additional troops to the Middle East. Washington has increased its forces in the Persian Gulf amid tensions with Iran. The US has already sent a strike group, including aircraft carriers, to the Middle East, citing alleged unspecified threats from Iran.
