15 June: Thousands march for gender equality in Zurich, Switzerland

Tens of thousands of women took part in the Women’s Stroke in Zurich on Friday to denounce what they see as the slow progress in reducing the gender pay gap and inequalities between men and women.

Footage shows the demonstrators chanting slogans and holding purple flares, signs and banners.

“I hope that we can all realise that when we all stand together, men and women, that we can achieve so much more than when we are fighting against each other,” said Lia, one of the protesters.

The protest comes nearly 30 years after a historic 1991 march in which half a million women – one in seven Swiss women at the time – demonstrated on the tenth anniversary of the gender equality constitutional amendment.
