Rescue operations were in full swing and reportedly several houses evacuated as wildfires engulfed large swathes of area on the road to Bellolampo, in the province of Palermo on Wednesday as Sicily in southern Italy continues to be severely affected by wildfires.
Footage from today show several sorties of helicopters and small Canadair planes dumping water over raging fire which damaged a wooded area and some nearby houses. Dozens of firefighters were seen fighting off the flames as heavy plumes of smoke billowed over the area damaging cars and other vehicles.
Reports also suggest visitors fled the nearby tourist town of San Vito Lo Capo but no casualties have been reported so far.
Sicily reportedly saw over 20 fires today which is being attributed to high temperatures and strong hot wind known locally as sirocco with some reports even suggesting arsonists in action.
