European Union Special Advisor for Venezuela Enrique Iglesias met Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas on Tuesday.
According to an official statement released by the Venezuelan government, the aim of the visit was “strengthening peace diplomacy with international organizations and to continue promoting the process of national dialogue with all sectors of the country.”
Iglesias also met Venezuelan Opposition Leader Juan Guaido at the headquarters of the National Assembly in Caracas earlier in the day.
Venezuela is facing social and humanitarian crisis following a political clash since January 23, when Juan Guaido declared himself interim president in a move now recognised by over 50 countries and international bodies including the United States and the European Union.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets leading to multiple clashes with police, while over four million Venezuelans have fled the country according to the UNHCR.
