A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Iran’s East Azerbaijan province in the early hours of Friday, killing at least five people and injuring more than 120 others.

The moderate quake had a depth of eight kilometers and struck near the city of Tark, around 120 kilometers from the provincial capital Tabriz, at 2:17 local time (2247 GMT).

The tremor caused many people to leave their houses and run to the streets in a state of panic.
