Live: The annual holy Hajj pilgrimage starts in Mecca on Friday, August 9, where millions of Muslims from around the world are expected to gather and perform a series of rituals for up to 6 days.

The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and, according to Islamic scripture, must be performed by every able-bodied believer with the financial means at least once in their lifetime.

During the religious ritual, Muslims from all over the world walk around the holiest place in the Islamic world, the Kaaba at the Masjid al-Haram Mosque.

This is considered to be the world’s largest human gathering and last year more than two million people were in attendance.
